“ Do you design modern farmhouse style homes?” is a question we face more and more.
More of our clients desire homes that are just that, homes. Not buildings, houses or dwellings, but homes. The feeling of a home and a return to nostalgic eras are reflected in the design briefs that we receive and one of the styles that have been sought after today is the farmhouse style.
Even though the word farmhouse may not sound very modern, the modern farmhouses have an architecture that retains the rustic and warm feeling of a home yet incorporates the modern to allow for a comfortable living. With the help of sleek design elements incorporated into the rustic, these homes are a perfect fit for both rural and suburban lots.

Flexibility and efficiency
We love creating timeless homes and design with adaptability in mind. Families and living constellations change over time, so designing a home that offers flexibility is important. Architeria’s signature homes are often designed in c-shape formations and this shape is ideal for a functional farmhouse design.

C-shaped farmhouses allow for clever zoning. Growing families can enjoy the space, ensuring privacy for the mums and the dads, but equally important is long term planning for empty nesters that do not want to downsize, as with this design and its sections, it is easy to shut off cooling and heating for the parts of the home that are not frequently lived in.
Australia is perfect for farmhouses, as we embrace indoor-outdoor living, and this suits the modern farmhouse design. The soaring ceilings and pitched rooflines that are typical for a modern farmhouse do not only offer something for aesthetics of a building. They ensure circulation by cross-ventilation for the warmer months as well as some well needed shade.
Farmhouse Aesthetics

With the typically gabled roofs, the homes remind of the more traditional homes with their barnlike structures. The implementation of timber is dominant, and vertical timber used under eves of the gable roofs create beautiful design elements. Other natural materials are commonly used such as stone, wood and metal. Colour palettes are neutral and earthy and exposed beams give the farmhouse its rustic and old feel. Steel framed windows in black add a contemporary look. Slate is timeless and adds elegance to the home, but shingle and metal roofs are good alternatives. Farmhouses have a presence, a sturdiness and identity, however smaller American style modern farmhouses borrow design elements from the Hampton style homes and are designed for the more suburban lots, and white seems to be the dominant exterior colour.
Warm Interiors
Ideal farmhouse floorplans are open and airy with central living and kitchen spaces to accommodate family and friends. Again, the seamlessness between the indoors and outdoors is an important feature, so sliding doors opening to wraparound porches is one way of extending the space for entertaining families.
Warm and cosy colours, earthy tones and the use of timber and stone with smooth venetian plaster will ensure a homely feel. We love exposed beams, iron pull handles and the use of matte stone in our farmhouse designs. The large windows allow for light, and windows with grid will add to the timeless look.
Oversized farmhouse sinks as well as large kitchen islands in neutral and warm colours with open shelving create kitchens to make memories in.
Indoor and outdoor stone cladded fireplaces add character as well as warmth, and a house with high ceilings can accommodate the most rustic and majestic of fireplaces with plenty of space for the Christmas stockings.
A farmhouse is welcoming, it is warm, and it will take you to the country, even in a suburb. For an acreage with endless views or for the best block on the street, we can make your farmhouse dream a reality.
